Joseph Au, Aypulumay, 2016, linocut print on paper, 200.4x111.5cm (image size), edition of 12

Ayupulumay means hunting or looking for food. During Sageraw Thonar we still have to go out hunting even though the weather on the water may not be good. I feature the totems of my family within my artwork. This work features the crocodile, which is the totem of both my mother and father. In each of the legs there are three bars carved. This mark represents my three kids. The pattern in the background of the print symbolizes the incoming and outgoing tide. When the tide is outgoing the water is calm – we call this Kulis.
