IACA Members Exhibition

Curated by:

Bereline Loogatha (Mornington Island Art)

Junibel Doughboy (Bana Yirriji Art Centre)

Florence Gutchen (Erub Arts)

Nephi Denham (Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre)

Artworks by leading artists from Indigenous Art Centres across Far North Queensland. Developed as part of IACA (Indigenous Art Centre Alliance’s) inaugural ‘IACA Indigenous Artsworker Program’ (IIAP) to up-skill artsworkers through specifically targeted and customised arts industry training.

IACA is delighted to partner with NorthSite Contemporary Arts for the first activity that will see First Nations artworkers from Cape York and Torres Strait communities, receive practical and targeted onsite training in exhibition design and installation.

Working with NorthSite staff, the IIAP participants workshopped a curatorial theme drawing inspiration from the NorthSite stockroom and artworks promoted by participating IACA Member Art Centres in the 2020 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

"This exhibition starts with the camp dog who is always there looking over everything. Then you have the Warrior, in these cultural Wik body-marking paintings by Wesley Ampeybegan Winchanam, and then the story crosses the Country, you see paintings from Girringun, Pormpurraw, these round ones Mornington, the seasons and drought paitings from Kuku Yalanji area around Mossman and north through the Cape and up to the cool waters of the reefs, represented by paintings of the turtles and jelly fish by artists at Hopevale and the ghostnet works from Erub." Bereline Loogatha.
