Screen printed tea towel based upon Eddie Kepple's 2009 linocut Orchid man.

50/50 cotton/linen, printed in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Artist: Eddie Kepple is from the Mungkan language group and lives in Pormpuraaw, Western Cape York. His totems are the blue tongue lizard, wedge tail eagle and sand goanna. He works out of the Pormpuraaw Arts and Cultural Centre.

Artwork story: When we go fishing and camping in my country we’ve got to give our underarm smell to every stranger that comes along with us. If strangers hunt animals, catch fish or find long necked turtle, or yam in the ground, they’ll be protected from being speared by my totem, the orchid man. This is because all this belongs to him, that his bush tucker. If he finds strangers hunting or digging in his land, he’ll spear them.

Blak Flair is a KickArts creative merchandise project that has been generously supported by the Christensen Fund. The project aims to develop a collection of merchandise that portrays the work of Indigenous artists from Far North Queensland, to promote their work and cultural importance to the broader community.
