For every palm I take I plant another as they can take 30 years to be ready.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a basket I might use a whole black palm, stripping all the fronds from the top of the tree. They are very strong fibers and there is quite a process to prepare it. My cousins often use the beautiful timber from the trunk for carvings so nothing is wasted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese baskets been made for thousands of years up here. They are used for all sorts of things, even carrying babies. Bagu is normally made from the boogadilla (milky pine tree) and Jiman are made from mudja (wild guava tree) or jiman.
