Akiko Hanazaki, 'Stoneware buffet bowl' with white marbling, 2020
Akiko Hanazaki was born in Japan and is now based in Cairns. Her ceramics style is influenced by various era’s of Japanese pottery, and also by her grandmother - who was a potter back in Japan. Experimentation is key to Akiko’s practice and no two pieces are ever the same. Using a variety of styles and materials Akiko is able to fuse different styles together. The traditional ‘Nerikomi’ (kneading) technique is one such example which allows Akiko to create unique pattens with coloured clay.
