The Blak Bean design is inspired by the black bean tree of Tropical Queensland, Australia. The tree produces seed pods that neatly tuck away seeds in the most efficient design. Lane's designs play with the seed shapes, pod lines, and layering. The design was born out of an international collaboration Tropical Punk Backpacks between Francoise Lane and Scottish designer Emily Millichip. The project was a finalist in the Creative Edinburgh 2018 Collaborations Award. The collaboration was supported by a collaborations grant given by the Australia Council for the Arts.
Francoise is a Torres Strait Islander woman whose maternal family is from Hammond Island. Together with husband Andrew Lane, they are Indij Design; A 100% Indigenous Owned award-winning architectural and design practice based in Gordonvale, QLD.
