Jane Dennis, 2017, Diamond Back Mullet, gyotaku print, ink on Japanese kozo rice paper.
This technique creates an image using fresh fish as the master plate.
Originally designed by Japanese Fishermen to record their fish species, they would take paper and ink out in their boat and would 'rub' an impression by painting over the whole fish body.
While several images may be taken from each fish no two images remain the same.
Jane Dennis lives and works in Cooktown.
