'Camped By The River' by Kate Hunter 2024

"This series of jewellery is a response to my surroundings whilst camped at Davies Creek.

Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku in Japanese, means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses.

I have used pictogram stamping on the metal to illustrate my feelings and observations, creating visual stories as I have walked in moving meditation, swam and noticed the wild life and tree leaves, quietly enjoying nature.

This series has a whimsical playful feel in a variety of earths's metals tha treflect the glinting sun and the natural environment." - Kate Hunter

Catherine Hunter (Kate) is a contemporary jeweller and object maker, environmental installation artist and earthling. Born in Coffs Harbour and raised in rural Upper Orara NSW, Kate graduated with a Bachelor of Design: majoring in Jewellery and Metalsmithing from the SA CAE in 1984, with distinctions.

With a fascination for different materials Kate works in metals, ceramics, fibres, textiles, found objects, what ever she needs to tell an intended story. Working full-time in her studio arts practise since 2013, she lives on the edge of a mangrove estuary in Cairns, Queensland.

An accomplished Seafarer with a Degree in Nautical Science and 20 years of innumerable sea miles crossing oceans, transiting coastlines and harbours world wide, has piqued Kate’s awareness of global environmental challenges. Her jewellery and installation pieces are visual narratives of nature’s struggles and triumphs, evoking feelings of being from the natural world, each piece crafted by hand.
