Cholena Hughes (Koa descendant) was born on Turrbal Country, grew up on Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) Country and now lives on Jinibara Country. After completing studies at Tafe and University, Cholena has established a diverse arts practice across multiple visual art mediums. Using a variety of materials and processes, her art shares her love for Country as a practice of self-care.
Using various clay types (including wild clay from the property where she lives), Cholena also incorporates the use of raffia after firing to continue the story of the piece, and connection of Country through the energy of the process. By spending dedicated time out in the bush Cholena is able to observe and connect with the life around her and feed the feelings of these experiences into her work.
Cholena wanders in the bush, listens, breathes in the air, her senses observe all the intimate details with a feeling of incalculable significance and importance with the connection to her environment. Her artwork offers the viewers a glimpse of the process and experience felt.
