These handpainted Oyster Shells are inspired by Christmas lunch in the artists family. Each is meticulously cleaned, dried, painted, decorated and coated in a layer of resin to finish them off and protect the surface. They can be used as decorative items, trinket dishes or even framed as an artwork.
ABOUT THE MAKER: 'I grew up second-hand shopping in Gimuy/ Cairns (Yirrganydji nation) with my mum and aunty in the 70s & 80s. We would spend hours bargain hunting for clothes, shoes, bags & accessories. I would then style my pieces into unique outfits.
I'm passionate about reducing clothing, plastic & household waste. All my clothing & homewares are sourced from second-hand shops or donated from family and friends. My jewellery is made from recycled plastics & repurposed jewellery.
I have always had an individual, sometimes quirky, but always unique sense of style. I got this from my mother. The most beautiful blak woman. I love altering everyday items and transforming them into a piece of art. I weave phrases and words that are powerful and meaningful to me into many of the pieces.
I was that kid that hung around mum, nanna and the aunties to make the tea and hear the latest community news. This gave me a deep love for mob and our ways of connecting, supporting, sharing and strategising. I honour my family and ancestors for the gift of storytelling, to listen deeply and genuinely, to amplify our voices, stories and expertise. All of my work is grounded in black love and joy.'
