“I started woodturning in 2016 and prior to that had not taken part in any creative activities.
I lived my early working life on our family grazing property in western Queensland and some of the construction and maintenance work involved building fences and stockyards., I think that early experience is where I developed a love for working with wood. On my retirement, I joined the Innisfail Woodworkers Guild and became fascinated with wood turning and now do a lot of my work from home.” – Garry Jillett
HUON PINE
The Huon Pine is a native tree to the wet south west of Tasmania. These trees are among the oldest living organisms on Earth with some specimens older than 2,000 years. It is thought that some groves may have existed for 10,000 years. Huon Pines grow slowly (1mm per year in girth) often taking centuries to reach their full height. The wood is highly prized for its golden-yellow colour, fine grain, and natural oils, in particular, methyl eugenol which gives a distinctive smell and makes the timber resistant to decay.
Historically huon pine was highly valued by ship builders, but after many years of overharvesting, it is now protected. Only fallen timber may be harvested by registered entities in designated areas. For this reason, it is very valuable and is sought after by artisans for woodworking, musical instruments and decorative items.
These sachets contain the shavings gathered from Garry’s lathe. The huon pine oil, or methyl eugenol, provide the following benefits:
o Natural Pest Repellant – deters silverfish, moths, fleas and mites
o Air Purification – absorbs unpleasant smells and reduces air pollutants
o Antimicrobial Properties – has antibacterial and antifungal qualities which help eliminate harmful germs
o Respiratory Support – helps clear nasal passages and congestion so can ease the sympltoms of a cold.
For these reasons, these sachets can be used for a number of purposes around the home. They will last for a very long time, and will not lose their effectiveness.
