"I come from Koedal, Kurrzi and Dhangal totem through my parents. I live and grew up in Kubin Village on Mua island in the near western cluster. My art work describes the stories told by our ancestors through their dreams, which are passed down by our fore fathers to father to son. This transcripts in our mind, then the stories are put into painting, printing & carving."
"The Maritme strike began in 1936, this strike was about the under payed worker, that government took advantage. The protecton act was in place removal of our people and under rated worker. The word was used to pass by an boat named Wakaidnah the skipper was (Athe)Walter Mairu, who travel around each island telling that there was a strike on and everyone need to stop working, because of the treatment that was given to us back then. Eventually the first Island Council was formed back in august 23 1937. The images on the print are reflected on the Maritme Strike that took place in 1937, when you reflect back and think how the word traveled to each Island, that created the maritme Strike." - Fred Joe
