Far North Queensland artist Nina Lavarini Dawson takes inspiration from the natural environment – utilising native tropical plants to transform textiles through an eco dye method. Her one off textiles see seasonal environmental transformations captured across her range of scarves. The colour produced in each scarf is affected by a number of environmental and climate conditions – seeing a spectrum of colour produced.

"My wearable art range focuses on natural plant dyes and natural fibres and is inspired by the wonder and beauty of nature. My work aims to encourage people to reconnect with their earth roots and to see ourselves as part of the ecosystem rather than separate. What we do to the environment affects us directly. Being a plant lover, ethnobotanist, grower and planter of our leafy friends, my plant dyed range is my form of expression and connection to the natural world. I spend my time researching and collecting local plants to experiment with to create new nature colours for my clothing range. I am constantly surprised and overjoyed at the colours teased from the leaves into the fabrics in my cauldron.
I also continue to design, create and screenprint natural fibre handmade and sweatshop free clothing. My designs are inspired by our natural environment and my beautiful rainforest seaside studio where I live and create all my artwork with love. I am always conscious of my impact on the environment in my arts practice and in my lifestyle, and my clothing and accessory range aims to honour and respect our mother nature."
