"Like children everywhere, those from the Torres Strait Islands spend much of their playtime in make-believe, mimicking the actions of their elders – fishing, hunting dancing and fighting. One of the favourite games played by boys [and also by men] was the holding of toy canoe races along the shallow waters of the beaches. Replicas of bigger boats, decked out with palm leaf sails, were also made and raced with great enthusiasm. These races are still held today on a number of islands."
