"Timeless, layered history of landscapes inspires my art through the patterns, designs, shapes, lines and colours. In the close-up view of surfaces, I’m exploring the earth’s essence through the language or calligraphy written on the various surfaces by nature. This tells of an unknown language that provides stories created by nature. Seeking to articulate this representation of the language by becoming attuned to these markings through observation, awareness and appreciation.

Bush and rainforest evoke a strong sense of calm belonging and presence - places to pause, breathe and reflect on how these quiet sensory experiences give rise to internal states of contemplation. These places counteract the unpredictable world we now live in and questions our lost connections with the land. My work focuses on the small spaces and subtle details of the land underfoot, the environments I move through and the emotional echoes, seen and felt, that emerge through continuing engagement with nature." - Melissa Waters
