Kerem or Keram Baskets originate from along the Keram River. The river is a major tributary of the Sepik River & winds its way along, feeding into the lower Sepik, which is in the East Sepik Province, it also flows through the northern region of the country, touching the border of Madang Province.

The basket is made from Water Reeds, harvested from the marsh areas along the Kerem River, they are dried then split into thin strips. Colours comprise of natural, orange and green tones are from locally sourced organic dyes. The bright colours are commercial dyes which are a recent addition to the overall look of the basket.

The handle is made of harvested Wild Tulip Bark, stripped into thin strips, dried, rolled into strings then tied around a bunch of water Reeds. Artisans use their traditional skills and knowledge to produce these hand woven items.

Previously the Kerem River areas were known for their wooden Carvings which promoted traditional skills, knowledge and stories predominately pertaining to men. The women artisans along the Kerem River are now able to tell their stories and continue their skills and knowledge through these hand woven baskets, catching up with their menfolk. Papua New Guinean women now more than ever are looking at ways to participate in the economy and encourage each other in this journey.
